Working alongside NeuroRestore
NeuroRestore is a research, innovation and treatment centre associated with EPFL, the Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) and the University of Lausanne (UNIL). Its mission is to restore neurological functions, with bioengineering strategies that pair neurosurgical interventions with implantable neurotechnologies.
Those treatments come out of fifteen years of careful preclinical research, and they have led to breakthroughs for people living with paraplegia, tetraplegia, Parkinson's disease, stroke and traumatic brain injury. The centre's programmes cover spinal cord injury, Parkinson's disease, stroke and a brain-spine interface.
How it started
Two years ago, we knocked on their door. There was no tender and no introduction, only a conviction: the work of Grégoire Courtine, Jocelyne Bloch and their team was one of the most inspiring uses of technology we had ever seen. Helping people with paraplegia walk again.
So we simply wrote to them: "What you're doing is amazing. How can we help?"
What we work on together
Two years later, we work alongside them on large-scale data processing: collecting, structuring and analysing data for AI, with the help of Gwenlake Atlas.
The goal is to make the processing of data from equipped patients faster and more efficient, so that their models can be updated more quickly. It is the gap Atlas was built to close: the one between data as it is collected and data a model can learn from.
Why it matters to us
At Gwenlake, we have always kept one foot in academic research, and it sits alongside our role as a research partner in MedTech Europe. This collaboration reminds us why: some projects are what give our work its meaning.
